not going to lie, the scene that worked the most for me in Polite Society (2023) is after the younger sister has broken Evil’s nefarious hold on her older sister—she’s driving them both away afterwards, giddy with triumph and talking about how sure, big sister has dropped out of art school but she has all these plans to help with her sister’s next step, and—
and, mildly, big sister says: I need to think about it first.
she very quickly reroutes the conversation into fries, their togetherness, and younger sister’s own goals, but I liked that moment. Where it’s acknowledged even briefly that big sister is not 100% liberated by the defeat of her splashy, action film enemies; that actually, her doubts and concerns are personal and have nothing to do with her mother’s plans or her sister’s projections or even her boyfriend-slash-fiancee-slash-worse.
Again, not a huge moment, it’s not the point of the film really; I liked it very much anyway.
a little more information regarding the maui wildfires:
medical workers on the ground are describing finding hundreds of bodies. the current death toll in the media is, unfortunately, only a fraction of the reality
hospital workers are describing injuries and trauma as if survivors had come out of a warzone
thousands are still missing
an apartment complex for the elderly was lost. not everyone could get out. people were saying goodbye to loved ones over the phone
people who did get out of lahaina were leaving with ashes covering their faces and nothing but the clothes on their backs. people are losing everything.
hotels are still operating. hotels are still operating. they are not the ones offering shelters or housing or food. even bowling alleys are offering shelter, but hotels have the audacity to build on burial sites but not open their doors to local families who have lost everything.

yeah ofc! so the popular poet richard silken tweeted about his views on fanfiction the other day and in said tweet he offhandedly mentioned having written wincest in the past (an incestuous ship between the two brothers from supernatural)
when confronted about it this was his responce
so essentially the old ”im not jacking it to incest, thats a crime, im simply jacking it to the idea of incest that im making characters play out for my gratuoitous enjoyment” lol. obviously i dont like this take very much as i think using things like sa or abuse as fetish material is harmful on multiple levels and contributes to the warped view on incest that many people have, as i said in the original post.
but what i found far far far more disturbing was the wide spread reaction to this being people praising him and openly talking about their love for incest erotica and fetishism etc etc. like in the tags of posts here, in qrts there, over all chalking it up as a No Big Deal. and it made me think about how people dont understand incest, leading to that post. thats really what shocked and disgusted me more than anything :(
I am glad that people are doing image descriptions. That feels like a good thing. However, maybe don’t do it if you don’t know what you’re talking about. I constantly think about that one where someone was like. It’s a wolf rabbit hybrid. And the person who drew it was just like it’s a coyote.
